Stockholm on a Rainy Day

Museum of Modern Art

Where: Skeppsholmen

Moderna Museet has one of Europe’s finest collections of modern and contemporary art. It includes key works by Pablo Picasso, Ljubov Popova, Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim, Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Judd and Irving Penn, along with works by contemporary practising artists.

The admission to the museum’s own collections is free. The other exhibitions costs 150 SEK. This is my favorite place to kill a few hours when I have nothing else to do. There are lockers, toilets, and a shop where you can buy posters and other fun stuff. On Tuesdays, the restaurant on the 4th floor is hosting a language café open to anyone wishing to learn Swedish. Read more about the language exchange here.

The café inside the museum is okay. The restaurant is quite good, serving a nice brunch buffet on weekends for 225 SEK. The view from the restaurant is amazing, maybe not so amazing on a rainy day, but if you come here in the summer sit on the porch and enjoy the view of Royal Djurgården across the lake.

Skeppsholmen is a beautiful, small island easily reached from the city centre by foot. The other option is to take the Djurgården ferry from the Old town.
